Kids Bedrooms That Work And Look Good

By Rodney Morrissey

Kids’ bedrooms are fun to decorate at any stage of their development. Functionality is just as important as style, as a child will use their room for multiple purposes throughout their life.

Nursery
Believe it or not, the choices one makes in decorating their child’s first bedroom can have a profound effect on the way that the child develops. First-time parents, seeking to create a gender-neutral haven for their precious bundle, often choose yellow paint for the walls. Unfortunately, science does not support this choice. Infants placed in yellow rooms cry much more than infants surrounded by other colors. Neutral walls in cream or beige are the best bet for an infant’s room, allowing parents to add splashes of color that will stimulate their child without making them overly excited or nervous. Parents can also add color by placing mobiles and other stimulating toys around the crib to encourage the child’s mental and physical development.

A new parent needs a child’s nursery to work well. Every piece of furniture should have multiple uses to maximize the space. The crib must be sturdy to hold the child’s weight and to withstand the occasional fits of temper as the child matures. A soft mattress, lined with plastic, covered with cotton sheets provides the perfect place to sleep. Bumpers ensure that, even when the child rolls over, he will not come into contact with the hard wooden posts. A low dresser with a changing table is the perfect multi-functional piece. Its drawers store diapers and other baby supplies while the child is still an infant. The pieces can then transition with the child and function as a dresser. A rocker-recliner is a must-have for those late-night feedings. It also transitions into provide a place for a parent to read to their child.

Pre-Teen Bedroom
Once the child has progressed to their toddler years, they usually have a sense of style that is all their own. During this time, parents should allow the child to express their individuality in their room. If the child is fond of a certain color, paint the walls using that color. If it is a truly garish color, paint only one wall as an accent. If a young boy likes cars, his parents could buy a bed shaped like a race car for his first “big boy” bed. If a young girl likes butterflies, her parents could place butterfly appliqués on the walls and purchase a four-poster canopy bed to create her own little dream world. Again, furniture should perform multiple functions whenever possible. Knowing that most children enjoy having a friend sleep over, parents should consider a trundle bed. A trundle bed is an extra mattress that tucks underneath the child’s bed. The trundle is pulled out for extra sleeping space when needed. A toy chest is an excellent addition to any child’s room. It provides storage space, reducing clutter. It also teaches children to put away their toys. A child-sized table and chairs give a budding Picasso ample space to work and play.

Teen Bedroom
A teenage child’s bedroom is a true multipurpose room. It functions as a place to sleep, a place to do homework, a place to escape siblings, and a place to gather with friends. Parents should think “dorm room” or “apartment” when decorating a teen bedroom. After all, the child will need to take most of their bedroom furniture with them whether they are heading to college or a career. A loft bed is an excellent choice for a teen bedroom. Elevating the bed has a practical purpose as well. The space underneath the loft bed makes a perfect “office”. Place a built-in desk and a small bookcase under the loft bed. Use the space at the back of the bed for a bulletin board. The desk has ample room for a computer, printer, and other accessories a teenager needs to succeed in school. If the room is large enough, consider adding a futon or a small sofa bed. In the seated position, the futon provides additional seating for friends. In the sleeping position, it provides extra bed space. Beanbag chairs add splashes of color. They also stack neatly in a corner when not required for seating.

Excellent article with very good ideas! You listed many of the ones I've used, particularly the nursery in a neutral colour. You can do so much more with coloured accessories when you have a neutral base.

I do not currently have any Kids so I have never designed a Child's bedroom. Great Intel btw, would have been cooler if you included pictures.
